Canine parvovirus was first diagnosed in 1978. Because of its strength and mobility, the virus proceeded to go worldwide in less than 2 years. The parvovirus is a virus that mutates. While the canine parvovirus can be hindered with the proper shots, it is a vicious disease that is extremely contagious, dangerous, hard to contain, and needs to be slowed or stopped as soon as it is suspected.

Canine parvo tends to more readily infect Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, American Staffordshire Terriers and their Pit Bull cousins more than other dogs. The first and foremost method of dodging a parvo infection is to get your puppy his shots. Unfortunately, no vaccine offers a 100% guarantee against parvo. Also, vaccinations help but there is no direct anti-viral medication for parvo. I have read horror story after horror story about under-vaccinated puppies coming home from the breeders or the pound only to go straight to the ER days later to die from Parvovirus. A puppy's vaccination schedule should always be up to date.

Parvo tends to prey upon puppies between 6 weeks and 6 months in age. Only 1,000 units of the virus are needed to cause an infection. An infected dog passes 35 million particles per ounce of stool. Parvo is plentiful and covers a lot of ground rather freely. Unfortunately, all a puppy has to do is sniff an infected stool for a serious chance at contracting parvovirus. Usually the infection is a result of ingestion. Oral contact with infected feces or immediate area are enough to warrant infection as well. It is also interesting is that parvo will survive almost anywhere. Parvo can be tracked into a house by the feet of a person who lives with a parvo-infected dog, or has visited a parvo-infected kennel or walked through an infected dog park. In my takedown of this subject, I've read accounts of people who feel that parvo can live for years outside of a host. There are countless other stories of it being tracked into new environments via clothing, tires, other animals, air, and water. It is also able to survive freezing temperatures in the ground during the winter. In short, if you have a dog, it will come in contact with parvo sooner or later.

After contact strong enough for infection, the parvo goes into an incubation period of three to fifteen days. Puppies are especially contagious to other dogs during this time. Another fascinating aspect of this virus is that its methods of attack can differ from dog to dog. Varying immune systems, whether the puppy is still nursing, and age play a part in the variety of parvo symptoms. As previously mentioned, proper shots and vaccinations are also key (there are stories of vaccinated dogs coming down with the disease). An example of the virus' varied attack patterns is that it can cause heart failure in a puppy less than 8 weeks old. Parvo can also cause respiratory (lung) failure. An untreated dog can die within 48 to 72 hours without the proper medical attention. The mortality of this disease can hit 91% if untreated. The virus usually starts by housing itself within the lymph glands. Fever and depression set in as the disease works its way to the intestinal tract. Parvo also simultaneously wrecks the dog's immune system as it shuts down white blood cell production in the marrow. Once in the intestinal tract, parvo's main purpose is to rip away at the intestinal lining. The result of this is that the intestinal lining is rendered unable to absorb food and water. There is also the potential for intussusception, which is when intestines slide in on themselves. Intussusception is basically a reducing of sections of intestine to the principles of a retracting telescope. The only solution to intussesception is surgery. Meanwhile, the dog is unable to control his fluid loss (via vomit and diarrhea) or stop the resulting bacterial infection.

Treatments for parvo are anti-nausea medication, fluid therapy (because of the constant vomiting and diarrhea), and antibiotics. With proper treatment there is an 80 percent recovery rate. Any dog that survives parvo is typically assumed to have a lifetime immunity from reinfection.

In the event of a post-parvo cleanup, everything that the infected dog has come in contact with needs to be sterilized. This means all dishes, floors, bedding, crates, etc. Parvo is impervious to many household disinfectants. Bleach is the key parvo-killer on surfaces. Steam cleaning on drapes, curtains, and upholstered furniture is another parvo-killing method. I have read stories of people staying vigilant with their parvo-disinfection for more than six months. The warning that I have heard again and again is that sterilized areas can easily become reinfected.

The accepted notion is that parvo will live for 30 days indoors after it has been introduced. The virus may still be alive, but it doesn't have the numbers to actually pull a full-blown infection off. Furthermore, all areas where the dog has defecated need to be purified with either bleach or scooped out of the yard. Shaded areas where an infected dog has left fecal matter should be considered infectious for at least seven months. Areas in the sun where an infected dog has left feces should be considered infectious for five months. One solution for the yard is a thorough soaking of the infected areas in order to dilute the virus. There are even accounts of people pouring bleach directly into the infected areas of their yards in to kill parvo off. In truth, it might very well be impossible to completely remove parvo from an environment. What has to happen is that there has to be such a reduction of the virus that it can't muster an attack. All dogs come into contact with parvo sooner or later in their lives. The longer a dog has been alive, the more time he's had to build up his immune system against it.

If there is any one reason to get your new puppy vaccinated and keep him up to date on his shots, parvo is definitely it. Parvo is one of the ugliest things that could potentially happen to a new puppy and his owner. With the proper information about symptoms, shots, and a comprehension of its aggressive migration, a puppy owner can hopefully control and temper the chances of a parvovirus onslaught.

Dog food aggression. While very simple at its base, a dog's food aggression can be complicated to work with and ultimately fix. If you come near your dog while he is eating and he waxes territorial with you, then you are probably experiencing his food aggression. "Waxing territorial?" That is a nice way of saying that the dog chooses to stand his ground, between you, and his food. There is probably a growl involved in there too.

Dogs with food aggression issues are a rather broad subject. For the purpose of this article, I am going to zero in on the aggression exhibited to their owners and not focus on aggression exhibited towards other dogs.

While researching food aggression, I found that there are several schools of thought in regards to this kind of behavior. Some people feel that this is a socializing process. That while as a puppy, the dog should have had people around while he was eating. A different theory is that this behavior is the dog asserting his "alpha dog stance" and that he needs to be assured that he is not the alpha. Other ideas include the notion that the dog has probably had to fight for his food prior to being in your household, perhaps in a kennel. Yet another theory is that your pet is regressing back to a time thousands of years ago and is having a hard time differentiating between ancient primal urges and the here and now.

Whatever the case is, this is a behavior that can be changed with a bit of patience from the owner.

The dog needs to know that the food is coming from the human in the first place. The big question that people on the business end of a dog's food aggression is "Hey! I give this guy food all the time! What's his problem?" Part of dealing with food aggression is to spell that point out for the dog.

One way to spell this out is to have specific feeding times. Free-feeding should become a thing of your dog's past. If there is always food out, the dog has no idea that it is coming from a source that should be respected. With specific feeding times, the dog will see you prepare or retrieve the food and place it in his bowl. Part of this process should be your order for the dog to "wait" until you have served the food. This way, the dog knows that the food comes from you. This can be a definite start towards food aggression diversion. The aggression has come from your dog's notion that you are the person who is going to take his food away. But if he sees you as the one providing it, it soothes his drive to protect his food at all costs. "Costs" is a good word, because for dogs, food is currency. Food is a dog's cash. In real simple terms, the dog needs to see you as the ATM.

There are other ways to assure the dog that his aggression will get him nowhere. One of these is to hand feed the dog. This could be sketchy, depending upon your orientation with your pet, but if you have a solid repertoire, this is a great method. This earns trust. If there is no bowl, and all of his food comes from your hand, he is going to get the message rather soon that you are the provider of all good things. Another method is to portion his meal out slowly. This can be done by giving him a few pieces, and then waiting for him to notice and look at you and then you to give him some more. You can also adjust this method by starting the bowl off with nothing. Place it down in front of him. Then slowly put in some food. Let him eat. Wait for him to look at you before giving more. This way he will know that you are running the show.

Another method is to place a quarter-full bowl of food on the ground. But before that can be completely eaten, drop some treats into the bowl. The adding of the treats can be done by leaning over and dropping them into the bowl, or (if safe) by actually picking up the bowl and adding them. If your dog is too aggressive, the same results can also be achieved by putting two bowls down in the first place. Then pull the bowl that isn't being eaten from and add treats to it. This way, the dog is going to see you as the bringer of good things, and will soon be more than willing to allow you to get near his bowl while he is eating. Another way to have your dog associate you with being "food-safe" is to call him away from his food while he is in the middle of a meal. If he comes to you, then give him a treat. Don't do this daily, but do it enough so that he is willing to "lower his bowl-guard" because you are giving him something more tasty than what is actually in his bowl.

Some also suggest that you should make your dog do a trick before he gets his food. This is to teach your dog that nothing comes for free and that you are the one in charge of the food. Yet another method is to leash your dog before feeding him. If he growls or shows aggression, pull him away from his food. This is especially good if your dog may in fact bite you if you get too close to the food while trying any of the previous methods.

If the situation is completely out of hand, all of the above methods may need to be applied over an extended period of time. If your dog growls while you are in his food vicinity, and you don't feel overly threatened, stand your ground. Remember that if you back off because of the growl, you have told the dog that his method is working. If you have to back off, then dive headlong into the aforementioned methods at the next feeding. He needs to be used to you. Stand just as far or a little closer the next time, and a little closer the next. Don't back off. A fistful of treats might help through this. Your ultimate goal is to be able to pet him while he eats. The adage that "you cant teach an old dog new tricks," is misinformed. It all boils down to the love and patience of the owner. Your dog is worth the extra time it is going to take to teach him proper food etiquette.

Dogs will take the cues offered by the above proven methods, but this is still your relationship with your dog. You understand him, and he for the most part, knows where you are coming from too. If you buy into the "alpha dog" philosophy, then your dog needs to know that you are an alpha who is a friend and a provider. Patience is key. Currency is another key. Food aggression is something that can be mastered in about two weeks if you play your cards right. Every day is a day of training, and if you keep the dog's food on an airtight schedule, sooner or later, it should all work out.

Dog food protein is essential to your dog. Dogs require more protein than humans. Interestingly enough, protein hasn't always been the focus of dog food. Wikipedia has several examples from the 1800s that show a dog food focus on cheese, milk, buttermilk, oats, barley-meal, potatoes and animal fat. Dog food has come a significantly long way. Now, dog food companies are concerned with dog food protein and the many different ingredients are needed to come up with a pet food product that matches the amino acids that a dog requires. These can all be synergised by using various different food combinations. Some feel that because dogs are direct descendants of wolves, that their protein requirement are one hundred percent meat based. Another argument is that dogs are naturally scavengers and will eat basically anything, whether it is a protein or not. Still others feel that with the domestication of dogs, and the fact that they have been living with humans for thousands of years, that they have evolved into incomplete carnivores. And there are more opinions beyond those as well. Even though dogs are built to take in more than just meat, the meats that go into regular commercial dog food are something that should be thoroughly comprehended. This subject is extremely broad, and I am going to do my best to touch on the major points. There is an incredible wealth of information on this topic and some of it is rather frightening.

Commercial dog foods tend to be comprised of one meat product and several other items that are generally carbs or meat by-products. The first five ingredients listed on the side of a bag of dog food tends to be a basic summary of 95% of its contents. This is fine, but the issue is when pet food companies embellish on the value of the product within the bag. It is a no-brainer that any dog owner should pay close attention to these items, and the way the items are placed and worded on the package.

When dealing with meat in general, the first 50% of a slaughtered animal that can be used is considered to be "human grade." Some people have felt that serving their dogs "human grade" food is a proper solution to all of their dog food needs. A lot of pet food companies use the words "human grade" as a catch-all phrase to make some of their food sound better than it really is. While the idea of a "human grade" food is a great one, but it isn't an absolute. To say that a food is human-grade is relatively misleading. What the term means is that the food is good enough to be consumed by humans. This has little to do with the processing of the product. The term "made with human-grade ingredients" doesn't mean that the end product is human grade. In short, the processing of human-grade meat could in fact be something that wouldn't be healthy for human consumption at all. The AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) doesn't even have a definition of "human grade" ingredients.

Some of the key items that are found in commercial pet food are animal leftovers that can't be sold at the local grocery store. These items of the animal are usually the brains, bones, eyeballs, blood, intestines, lungs, spleens, livers, ligaments, membranes, and fat trimmings. These leftovers are called "by-products" and tend to get used in pet foods. A good thing to know about animal by-products is that hair, horns, hooves, beaks and feathers aren't a part of the equation. As a general rule of thumb, higher-end pet foods don't even use meat by-products. If one registers at the AAFCO website and looks into animal by-products, the results could be considered encouraging. An example of this would be 4D meat (dead, diseased, dying or disabled) is considered "adulterated" and shouldn't be included in pet food unless it has been treated to a point where all dangerous microorganisms have been destroyed. Obviously, a dog food with meat by-products as the main ingredient is inferior to one that has a specific meat and then a by-product listed afterward.

The next level of meat is the meal. Various meat meals are extremely common ingredients in pet food. The reason the word "meal" is used is because the food is not necessarily fresh. It is also meat that has been rendered. Rendering means that the meat has been pulled apart in such a way that oil and fat are separated from the flesh through a serious boiling in a cauldron or vat. 4D foods are used much more readily with meal. Once again, they are cooked in such a way that all dangerous microorganisms are destroyed.

The next point is the fact that dog food is broken into single and multiple protein products. What this means is that a single protein is one form of meat. Multiple proteins (such as beef and turkey) would be considered to be two or more meats. Some feel that there is no sensible reason to give an animal a single-protein food. With multiple protein sources, the dog gets several different amino acids from each meat product. By running two proteins in tandem in a dog food, the right amino acid mix is easier to make. Furthermore, multiple proteins mean that less fillers are required, less fillers means less bulk on your animal, and an easier product to digest.

One of the arguments for grain within dog food is that a dog's required amino acids can be achieved through various mixes and matches of meat and grain products. The argument is usually about the quality of the meat and grain products used. One shouldn't forget that there is a slight protein ranking within grains such as corn, soy, and oats.

There is a high percentage of dogs that have food allergies. Corn is such a common additive, that some feel its constant inclusion with dog food has made it a regular culprit for dog food allergies. Soy is another culprit. Some feel that the number of dogs with food allergies may be as high as twenty percent, others ground the figure somewhere well below ten percent. Whatever the case may be, dog food companies have created hundreds if not thousands of different foods for dogs that should meet your dog's needs, even if he does have allergies. Obviously, a well balanced, meat-only diet would hit all of the required amino acid marks, and avoid potential grain allergies. Meat allergies however, are another reality that make the whole idea of dog food protein that much more complex.

Some standard meat allergies that dogs have are chicken and beef, which are two of the main meats in most dog foods. There are solutions available though. Lamb, duck, venison and turkey are other relatively safe alternatives. Lamb used to be the hypoallergenic cure-all, but dogs of late have been showing up with allergies towards this meat product as well. Bringing in these new ingredients might be what your dog needs and chances are that if the newer food has venison or lamb in it, your dog will be just fine with it.

Dog food protein should be a key element in your dog food shopping process. No matter how you feel about a dog's ancestry, it is good to know the definitions of the proteins and multiple proteins that are in your pet's food. You need a regular and systematic vigorous aerobic fitness program.

It's in the nature of the fit and healthy human being to get to sleep quickly, sleep like a log and wake up refreshed.

3. Deal with anxiety

The first casualty of anxiety is sleep. Find out what's causing your anxiety and deal with it.

He'd rejoice in the fact that he'd been woken up. If you've got something on your mind that's important enough to wake you up, get up, write it down, clear your mind and then go back to sleep.

6. Use an inner mental training program to go to sleep

Most children are told to go to bed, very few are taught how to go to sleep.

You're awake and the monkeys are chattering. Switch off the monkeys chattering inside your head and you'll go to sleep quickly.

You need an inner mental training routine which will help you to go to sleep quickly.

In affluent societies, regular, vigorous aerobic physical activity strengthens all of the major body systems and, along with diet and stress management is the foundation of good health.

The most immediate benefit of aerobic physical activity is that you feel better. The mind is just another body system, and like all body systems works better when you're aerobically fit.

Aerobic exercise stimulates the elimination system, the lungs, respiratory system, lymphatic and blood systems, liver, digestive system and the kidneys.

We live in an age when more and more people have over-stimulated sympathetic nervous systems, particularly people cooped up in offices, trucks and cars all day. The fight response that starts with the mind and then works through the endocrine system produces muscle tension, constricts blood vessels and alters a range of body functions. Aerobic exercise acts like a metabolic defrag and calms down an over stimulated sympathetic nervous system.

It overcomes insulin resistance. The major cause of adult onset diabetes is insulin resistance in the muscles due to lack of regular, vigorous physical activity. Whilst physical activity may not completely fix up a dysfunctional pancreas, it will go a long way toward enabling diabetics to manage type II diabetes without medication.

Vigorous physical activity stimulates the immune system through corticosteroid production and the increase of white blood cells. Elevated blood pressure is directly related to motion starvation. For the greater proportion of people, training aerobically, with vigour for 40 minutes each day will restore blood pressure to normal.

It reduces the risk of heart attack. Cardiac dysfunction usually comes at the end of a long chain of dysfunctions (autonomic nervous system, elimination system, liver... ). The status of all these systems is improved by regular, systematic and vigorous physical activity.

You have more energy and vitality.

When you are vigorously physically active you'll sleep better. That comes from Nathan Pritiken who said that if you don't have time to exercise take an hour off your sleep. Not only will you sleep better, you'll need less sleep.

Regular vigorous physical activity has a wonderful effect on improving libido. A lowered libido is a symptom of poor general health. It is dramatic evidence that a number of body systems are not working properly, from the head down. Increase your aerobic fitness and you'll end up lean as a greyhound and toey as a Roman sandal.

  • a heart rate of 120 is good, 130 is better and 140 is best.

The heart rate recommendations are for a 40 year old in reasonable shape. If you're older than that, or you're not in great shape, you can lower the heart rate target, but certainly to achieve the best results, exercise with what you think is vigor.

When you do that, the major organs of your body start to work better. One of those organs is your brain, so you feel better; it's an effective mechanism for elevating your mood.

So how do you start an aerobic exercise program?

First put on your sandshoes, then step out the front door. After that it's one leg at a time. If you're in poor shape, walk for one minute, then turn around and walk back. Every day walk for another minute. When you can walk for 40 minutes you'll be feeling better.

The secret to maintaining a regular exercise program is to do it with a friend. If you don't have a friend, take Harry Truman's advice and get a dog.

Of course if you're serious you'll build up to a run. If you've got your own a treadmill, stepper or exercise bike, train while watching one of your favourite television programs.

The second element of a successful home fitness workout is a strength training program. There are four exercises that I recommend you do after your aerobic workout.

  • situps
  • pressups
  • squats
  • superman back arches.

Start with 10 seconds worth and over the weeks and months build it up to a minute's worth.

What the strength exercises will do is improve your musculo-skeletal health. The world if full of people with musculo-skeletal pain because their muscles aren't strong enough to support their bones in good alignment.

The third element of a home fitness workout is a flexibility training program. In association with the strengthening exercises you'll definitely be able to get your body back in better alignment. It's the secret to relieving musculo-skeletal pain.
